The Island

Law Island is a 9 acre island just off the causeway in Colchester that allows first-come first-served primitive camping (so we may or may not be sharing the island). There are a couple picnic tables, an outhouse and that’s it; no running water or electricity. Trail and camping is dog friendly.

Getting there

That’s the fun part! Either walk 2 miles, or boat 3-4 miles.

On foot: the island is a few hundred feet away from the causeway, and the water is shallow enough to wade across. It is a 2 mile walk on the gravel Island Line Trail from the nearest reliable parking at Airport Park to the causeway. (There is a small lot only 1 mile away on Mills Point Road, but it is usually full on weekends.). As of August 20th 2025, the water crossing was ankle deep, but if we get heavy rain it could be as high as thigh deep. The shallowest crossing involves leaving the causeway a few hundred feet before you are at the closest point to the island.

On boat: If you have a boat, the nearest hand-carry boat launch is 3 miles away at Delta Park, while the nearest trailer access is 4 miles away at Colchester Pt. Do be aware that these routes are very exposed, and on a windy day waves can make it extremely difficult to paddle in a kayak/canoe. The island has no formal boat launch or mooring facilities, just a sandy/rocky beach; the northeast cove is usually the best landing site.

What to bring

  • Drinks (alcoholic or nonalcoholic) to share

  • Food to share for dinner or breakfast (fill out this form)

  • Drinking water for yourself

  • Drinking vessel

  • Footwear that can get wet (beach and lake have some sharp rocks and shells)

  • Towell/ bathing suit

  • Sunscreen/ bug spray

  • Change of dry clothes/ shoes

  • Warm layers (if camping)

  • Tent/sleeping bag/pad (tent sites are limited so if possible bring a smaller tent / share with others) (if camping)

The event will be held rain or shine, however we may have to heavily modify/relocate it if there is severe weather or if every possible camp-site is already taken prior to our arrival.
