Hasher Expectations & Accountability Guide
(and Other Unwritten Stuff We Wrote Down)
This guide further outlines our shared expectations to keep the hash fun and inclusive for all.
1. Consent Is Non-Negotiable
Consent to physical contact is mutual, informed, specific, freely given, and reversible—and it is absolutely required. No means no. The absence of “no” is not yes. If someone changes their mind—even mid-sentence—respect their choice without argument.
Hashing involves drinking, jokes, physical antics, and things you might not see in your average running club. That’s part of the fun. But none of that overrides the need for clear, enthusiastic consent before touching anyone in any way. If you're unsure, ask. If you're told no, stop. No debate, no whining, no excuses.
2. Boundaries Are Real
We all have different senses of humor, levels of comfort, and personal space preferences. You are responsible for establishing your boundaries clearly and directly. If someone crosses a line, whether physically, verbally, or otherwise, you are responsible for establishing your personal boundaries in a direct way with that individual. If it continues, inform the mismanagement team. Repeat offenders will not be welcomed back.
3. We Are Not Therapists
While we encourage mutual support and camaraderie, serious mental health concerns are best handled by trained professionals. If someone is struggling, encourage them to seek help from those qualified to provide it.
4. We Are Not the Police
We are not a governing body, law enforcement agency, or court of any kind. The Hash operates informally and does not have the capacity to investigate or adjudicate criminal behavior.
We do, however, have the right to set standards for behavior at our events. Serious misconduct, especially violations of our Code of Conduct or unacceptable conduct toward other hashers, may result in someone being asked not to return. That’s our prerogative.
5. Unacceptable Conduct Will Not Be Tolerated
Any serious violation of our Code of Conduct, especially violations of consent or behavior that threatens the safety, dignity, or well-being of another hasher, will result in removal from the group.
If you witness something concerning, let a member of mismanagement know. If you’re not comfortable doing so directly, find someone you trust who can help you speak up. Silence protects bad behavior.
6. You Are Responsible for You
Hashing involves alcohol, outdoor trails, rivers, cliffs, poor decisions, and questionable judgment. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety and well-being. The current Mismanagement is not trained in emergency medicine, wilderness safety, or babysitting. If you're worried about another hasher, talk to them directly or gather others to help.
7. Not Every Conflict is a Code Violation
Not liking someone, being offended by a joke, having a history with another hasher, or feeling someone is “a bit off” doesn’t automatically require action by mismanagement. We're adults, so we encourage you to resolve personal disagreements like adults. But if someone crosses into harassment or violates someone’s boundaries, that’s different. Bring it to mismanagement.
8. Communication Is Everything
No one can help if no one knows what’s going on. Letting your mismanagement know about a situation is the only way to a solution. If something happens, speak up. If you’re not comfortable doing so, find a trusted person who can act on your behalf. If you have a serious concern about someone’s behavior, bring it to mismanagement, not social media.
9. Decisions on Removal Must Be Thoughtful
No single individual should unilaterally decide to ban someone, and no mob should either. Any decision of this kind should involve a respectful, face-to-face discussion among trusted members. These situations are rarely black-and-white, and they deserve to be handled with care and nuance.
Please remember that Von Tramp is managed by volunteers and while we may not act or handle a situation the same way you would, we are always thinking about the health and safety of the group. The mismanagement of Von Tramp will work with the hash community to assess and improve this policy on an ongoing basis. We are all here to have fun but not at the expense of anyone’s safety or dignity.
